While our 'official' first edition will be early next month, I wanted to take a few minutes to tell you about me and what you can expect from this publication!
There are two reasons that you would subscribe to this newsletter...
💖 You're my mother and support literally everything I do.
👉 You're in charge of your department's recruiting and/or social media and are in need of some direction and help!
Well, my mother doesn't have a LinkedIn account, so let's get down to business with how I can help you attract more qualified candidates! 👍
Once upon a time...
I too remember the glory days of police recruiting. Start accepting applications and thousands of them are turned in. End up with a hiring list that has hundreds of names on it...take the cream of the crop...and do the whole thing again six months or a year later. 🎡
Over the past ten years though...things really started to change! Fast forward to today and Police Departments are facing a hiring and recruiting crisis like never before. Applications are down. Interest is down. And let's not even start on getting people to show up for testing...
But why? 🤔
A shift in political climate, unfair portrayal by the news media, and a lack of people wanting to do the job are the reasons usually named at the top of list.
Here’s the real question though...👇
W𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗳 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻’𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺?
In 2017, I asked myself that very question. What if, instead of believing all of the events plastered on television and social media were to blame, it was, in fact, our antiquated processes, outdated thinking, and same old, same old marketing philosophy that were hiding the abundance of applicants right in front of us who are used to a more modern way of doing things? 🤯
That’s why I developed and implemented the proven plans and strategies that I will teach you in future editions of this newsletter that will have your agency saying goodbye 👋 to:
❌ Pouring money into ineffective advertising methods
❌ Resorting to acts of desperation (lowering standards, taking shortcuts, etc.)
❌ Wondering what to do next
and returning to the gloriousness of:
✅ Attracting quality applicants organically
✅ Maintaining the integrity of your hiring process
✅ Knowing how to solve the problems you will face today, tomorrow and into the future
Why should you listen to me about police recruiting?
Look, I know what you’re thinking, “Yeah, Tom, that all sounds great, but why should I listen to you?” 🤷♂️🤷
Relax, I'm not going to throw my resume at you here...
(Have I won awards? Yes. Have I been doing this a long time? Yes. Have I taken classes, read books, and actually launched successful marketing campaigns? Yes, more than you can even imagine!)
To put it plainly...I know exactly what it is like to be you!
I've watched applications dwindle. Vacancies rise. I know the pressure and feeling in the pit of your stomach when the Chief asks 'when are we gonna hire someone?'. I've felt the enormous frustration followed by growing anxiety when the applicant you were counting on for the next academy calls and says they're accepting an offer somewhere else leaving you short of your goal, once again.
But I also know what you don't! I've been marketing things nearly my whole life...I've been a cop for coming up on nineteen years...and I know how to combine these two knowledge bases to solve your recruiting and hiring problems! 🙌
So there's no confusion, I'm not going to do it for you! That wouldn't help solve your problem. Let me explain...
You know how when someone graduates the police academy and heads out onto Field Training? We don't just throw them out there on patrol and hope for the best, right? Well, often times in police recruiting and marketing though, that's exactly what happens! Someone is just thrown into the position with little or no experience at all. 😳
Think of me as your Marketing FTO. 👮 I'm here to teach you how to do this! Show you the ins and outs and give you the skills you'll need to function on your own. Whether you're at a big agency, a mid sizer, or even a small agency, I've got the plans and strategies that will absolutely take you from wondering what to do, to ensuring proper staffing well into the future. 🚀
If you're ready to learn, I'm here to teach!
What can I expect from the newsletter?
To start, I'll publish the Marketing 'For Cops' newsletter once a month during the first week of the month. Each edition will teach you an aspect about marketing and recruiting as well as provide you some content ideas, examples, and resources to turn your agency into a powerful magnet for the type of candidates you are seeking.
As we grow, we'll likely add more frequent editions, but the information you'll gain from the newsletter and posts on my timeline should be more than enough to get you going in the right direction.
In closing...
I truly appreciate your time in reading this newsletter and I am incredibly excited to bring it to you! There's a whole new world of applicants out there waiting, and I can't wait to show them to you!
