If you’ve ever sat through an outside recruiting company’s sales pitch and thought, “wow…this might finally solve our hiring problem” only to try it and realize nothing changed, you’re not crazy. 🤪
There’s a reason that keeps happening in your police recruiting. 😳
Want me to let you in on the secret? 🙋♂️🙋♀️
Here are five things outside recruiting companies don’t want you to know about police recruiting…keep reading! 👀
Hey everyone, it’s Tom Sye your Police Marketing FTO, and this week, we’re talking about something that can quietly make police recruiting feel way more complicated than it actually is. 🫤
Now listen, I want to be clear about something right from the start. Not every outside recruiting company out there is bad. Most of them are run by former law enforcement officers and are just trying to help and feel that their product or service can do just that. 🤷♂️
But the problem with the solutions being sold right now is that they make recruiting feel harder, more expensive, and more confusing than it needs to be. And when that happens, agencies start thinking they have to have outside help just to keep up. 🤦♂️
The truth is…most of the time, you don’t. You can do everything you need...and I'm taling real police recruiting strategies, by yourself ! 🤯
So, let me pull back the curtain here and tell you about the five things outside recruiting companies hope you never realize...
Police Recruiting Company Secret 1: You don’t need them
Let’s get the biggest one out of the way right off the bat. 🥊
A lot of outside recruiting companies want you to believe they have some kind of secret formula that only marketing professionals understand. But when you really break down what they’re selling, all of it is things agencies can absolutely do themselves. 🤫
✅️ Social media posts
✅️ Simple video content
✅️ Clear explanations of your hiring process
✅️ Showing people what it’s like to work for your department
None of that requires a marketing degree, proprietary system, or massive contract. It requires knowledge, consistency, and someone in your agency who understands what modern recruiting actually looks like. 👌
Once you learn that skillset, you realize pretty quickly that there's something that doesn’t need to be outsourced...your police recruiting! 💯
Police Recruiting Company Secret 2: They sell exposure, not applicants
Another thing you’ll hear a lot from recruiting companies is a bunch of talk about impressions, reach, clicks, and views…and those things sound impressive to the untrained ear. 🤨
But exposure does not equal applicants. ❌️
Connection does. 🙌
A polished ad might get seen by thousands of people, but if it doesn’t help someone understand what it’s like to work for your agency, again, what your process looks like, or why they should apply in the first place, it’s not moving anyone closer to making that decision. 👎️
Recruiting works when people feel comfortable enough to picture themselves working there. And that my friends...is something no marketing metric could ever guarantee because it’s unmeasurable in police recruiting. 📏🚫
Police Recruiting Company Secret 3: They really don’t want you to solve your police recruiting problems
This one might make a few people uncomfortable, but you know I’m all about calling things out to help protect you, so here it goes... 📣
Outside recruiting companies are businesses first. Their goal is to keep clients. 🤑
So, if your recruiting problem gets permanently solved, their service is no longer needed. 😒
That means many of the solutions being sold are designed to keep agencies coming back for more! More campaigns, more ads, more contracts, and more consulting. 💸
But real police recruiting success comes from building internal knowledge so your agency can consistently attract applicants on its own. 🧠
When agencies finally understand that…their police recruiting changes. 🚀
Police Recruiting Company Secret 4: No one knows your agency like you do
Yes...outside recruiting companies can create polished graphics, slick videos, and professional looking advertising…but they don’t know what it actually feels like to work at your agency. 🤖
Sure, they may ask you a couple of questions in an initial meeting and film some officers talking about why they like working there…but at the end of the day, they don’t know a thing about what it’s like to work for you. They don’t know your people, they don’t know your culture, they don’t know the real stories happening every single day inside your agency. 😶
And those things matter way more to applicants than polished marketing ever will. 😎
Remember, applicants are trying to answer one simple question…“am I gonna fit in there?” 🤔
That answer can only come from someone on the inside of your police recruiting. 🫵
Police Recruiting Company Secret 5: Nobody can market your agency better than you
All of this brings us to the most important point of all…nobody, and I mean nobody, can market your agency better than you. 💪
Not because you’re a professional marketer, or because you have fancy equipment. But because you live the job, at your agency, every single day. 🤩
You know what the work is like. You know the people. You know the community you serve. 🫶
When recruiting content comes from the people who actually do the job, it builds something that outside marketing can never replicate…and that is trust. 🦸♂️🦸♀️
Trust doesn’t come from clichés or generalities about law enforcement…it comes from real life experiences and genuinity delivered on a daily basis. That’s what turns curiosity into applications. 📝
Listen, police recruiting in 2026 isn’t about finding the flashiest campaign or the most expensive advertising package. It’s about clarity. It’s about consistency. And it’s about showing the right people why your agency is the right place for them. 😍
If you’re sitting there realizing that you don’t need an outside company to fix your recruiting problems, you’re right…but you do need to know what to do instead. 👇
That’s exactly what I teach inside my police recruiting training course the Social Media Driving School. I’ll show you how to take full control of your recruiting, build real connections, and turn your social media into an applicant attracting machine! 🧲👮♂️👮♀️
