Been struggling to gain traction with your police recruiting on social media? 🙋♀️🙋♂️
I’ve been there. 💯
And what I’ve learned is there’s a big difference between what you should be doing and what you can realistically be doing. Here are my five police marketing – should vs. reality - social media best practices…keep reading! 👀
Hey everyone, it’s Tom Sye your Police Marketing FTO, and this week, let’s talk about your police marketing efforts on social media. There’s a lot of ideas and theories floating around out there as agencies more and more come to the realization that social media is the police recruiting table of 2025 and beyond…which is a good thing. 👍
But if you’re an agency trying to keep up with what everyone else is doing…well, that’s enough to fill up your workday on its own and can leave you feeling nothing short of stressed out and quite frankly sick of it all. 😩
Let’s get you reset and eliminate all of that ‘what’s everyone else doing’ stress by tackling these five basic police recruiting – should vs. reality – social media best practices…
Police Recruiting Fix 1: Police Recruiting Social Media Platforms
There’s a lot of platforms out there and you’ve heard me say multiple times…you should be on all of them! And that is the absolute goal. But relax…here’s the reality of it and what I really mean. 😁
You should be on as many social media platforms as you can handle. ☺️
Being everywhere is great…but if you don’t have time to post everywhere daily, answer questions everywhere daily, or build audiences everywhere daily…you’re actually doing more harm than good by being on a platform you don’t pay any attention to. Stick to what you can handle but don’t stop striving for more, because in police recruiting, consistency on the platforms you choose will always outperform being everywhere without a real presence. 💪
Police Recruiting Fix 2: Content Customization
Each platform has different specifications in terms of photo aspect sizes and video dimensions, so if you want your stuff showing up in the best possible way, you should be customizing each piece of your content to fit each platform. Doing this will actually positively affect the reach of your posts because the algorithm will favor it over other pieces of content that are not optimized in this way. 🧠
Here's the reality though…that takes time and it’s a tedious task with having to reposition elements if they are not automatically resized in your editing program. So…with that being said, if you only have time to make one design…just make one design and use it everywhere. Something…whether customized for each platform or not…is better than nothing, and in police recruiting, consistency with your content will always beat perfection that never gets posted. 👌
Police Recruiting Fix 3: Caption Structure
Truth be told…your captions are every bit as important as the photo or video that you post and will one hundred percent cost you applicants if you are neglecting them. You should be creating captions that fit each platform’s requirements. For example, Instagram won’t allow you to have an active link in theirs…so it’s important to direct people to the link you have in your bio so they can get to where you want them to go from there. 🔗
While yes, this takes time and a lot of effort the reality is – structuring your captions to match each platform is something you should absolutely with zero exceptions be doing. It’s super important, and in police recruiting, this is what helps turn attention into actual applicants instead of just views.‼️
Police Recruiting Fix 4: Daily Posting
Keeping your agency at the top of your potential applicants’ minds is paramount if you expect them to actually apply for you in the future and the best way to pull this off is by posting daily. 📲
Now, this requires some effort and the reality is…you may be tasked with several other things during the course of your day which takes this option off the table. So, your best practice is to pick a posting schedule that works for you…whether it’s every day, 3 times a week, or even once a week commit to it and stick with it. Consistency is key, and in police recruiting, this is what keeps your agency visible to the people who are considering applying.🗝️
Police Recruiting Fix 5: Branding Your Police Marketing
Every single photo or video that you put out and caption that your write should have one thing in common…it is unmistakably your agency! You never want to have someone guessing as to who posted what at first glance because guess what? They’re not going to look to find out. 🤷♂️
The reality of this one is that doing this is a must but the good news is - it’s really simple to pull off. Make sure your logo, whether it be your badge, coin, patch or wordmark, is prominently displayed in the same exact place in every photo or video you make. Use a branded hashtag and/or slogan in every caption you write for a double shot of brand recognition power. Again, this really takes no extra time and is something you can build a template from to easily use over and over again, and in police recruiting, this is what helps people instantly recognize your agency and remember you when they’re ready to apply. 👯♀️
